Music, P-12 Certification, B.S.

Designed for students pursuing careers as music educators at the elementary/secondary levels. Concentration options in choral or instrumental music, pedagogical and practical experiences in teaching music are provided. Students must earn a “C” or higher in all teacher education and teaching field courses.

University Core and General Education Electives


The University of Mobile’s undergraduate program is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, School of Christian Studies, School of Education, School of Music, School of Nursing, School of Worship Leadership, and Adult and Professional Studies.  All University of Mobile undergraduate students are required to complete certain basic courses that apply uniformly to the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Business Administration degree, the Bachelor of Science degree, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and the Bachelor of Music degree unless otherwise noted.  These are identified as basic course (general education) requirements.

*Notes:


  1. Consult with your College/School advisor for specific and/or additional requirements relating to general education courses.  For example, COM 101  is required for business, Christian ministries, and education majors and teacher certification students.  MA 110  is required for all majors in the School of Business.  Education majors and teacher certification students have very specific requirements, particularly regarding English, Mathematics, History, and Laboratory Sciences.
  2. FS 100 Freshman Seminar (1 semester hour) is required for freshmen only. 
  3. Students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree must also take twelve semester hours of a foreign language.  See specific requirements in the World Languages section of the catalog.

Notes:


Students in this program are required to pass the piano proficiency test, present a senior recital as outlined in the CPA Student Manual, take supporting studies in the School of Education and complete the University’s basic course requirements .

*Official admission into the teacher education program is required prior to enrollment in restricted professional teacher education courses.

Students who are admitted to the teacher education program will be subject to ongoing evaluation. See requirements for admission in the School of Education  section of this catalog. This degree requires no minor.

Students may take only one course during the academic period (semester) of student teaching.

Students must earn a “C” or higher in all teacher education and teaching field courses.

Ensemble Participation


Music Education majors are expected to participate in ensembles in the area in which they plan to student-teach.

  1. Vocal/Choral music education students should participate in University Singers (seven-eight sequential semesters) and a secondary (small) choral ensemble (four semesters/audit approved).
  2. Instrumental music education students should participate in the Symphonic Winds or Chamber Strings/Orchestra (seven-eight sequential semesters) and a secondary (small) instrumental ensemble (four semester/audit approved).

Note:


Students whose applied area is in guitar/piano are encouraged to participate in University Singers and the Guitar or Piano ensembles, thereby giving them experience in both small and large ensembles and broadening their instrumental and vocal experiences for classroom instruction.
Students must earn a “C” or higher in all teacher education and teaching field courses.
