Our Mission & Purpose

The School of Health and Sports Science’s mission is to develop and prepare individuals to be future leaders in a variety of health and sport science professions by incorporating a biblical foundation with emphasis on glorifying God by following the principles of 1 Corinthians 6:19-20

Health and Sports Science is more than areas of academic study; it is a way of life. At the University of Mobile, this way of life includes a commitment to our Christian faith which is vital to the university’s mission and purpose.  Academic programs prepare students to be proficient professionals in careers related to health care, wellness, physical activity, and sport. Graduates are prepared for graduate school in athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and careers in many other various professions such as sport coaching, sport administration, and teaching physical education (P-12) and health education (6-12).

The faculty of the School of Health and Sports Science is dedicated to building relationships within the health care, fitness and wellness, and sport industries worldwide. The School’s programs also help meet critical needs in various health-related professions by developing and maintaining professional relationships between university faculty and practitioners in the field. Professional interactions between faculty and real-world practitioners are essential in order to provide valuable learning experiences for students so they may excel in their chosen profession.

Interdisciplinary Program

The faculty of the School of Health and Sports Science recognizes that the professional areas within health and sports science are very multifaceted and rapidly growing. To meet the needs of this fast-growing and broad profession, academic programs are interdisciplinary in structure and include courses within kinesiology, physical education, exercise science, pre-medicine, biology, chemistry, physics, business, economics, psychology, chrisitan ministry, and other related areas.

Faculty

The School of Health and Sports Science faculty members are experts in their field with extensive practical experience. All academic programs incorporate real-world learning through lab experiences, dynamic clinical and professional internships, and advanced student teaching supervision.

Students

Students in the School of Health and Sports Science strive to become proficient in their area of expertise as they pursue their professional career, through rigorous coursework and hands-on experience with our faculty and the professionals in the field.

Professional Opportunities

The Health and Sports Science curriculum prepares students to pursue and further their educational opportunities after graduation. The curriculum programs also help students continue their professional ambitions toward careers in health, sport and wellness. Our graduates have the opportunity to seek careers in sport and athletic health care, athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, sport performance, health and wellness, fitness facility management, physical education, health education, coaching, exercise programming, nutrition, and sport administration.

Department of Kinesiology

The Department of Kinesiology offers the Bachelor of Science degree in Kinesiology, Exercise Science, and Sport Administration as well as a minor in Kinesiology for other disciplines. A student majoring in Kinesiology can choose a minor or supporting fields in other disciplines or one of the advising tracks in Kinesiology in lieu of a minor. The advising tracks are: Health and Physical Education Teacher Certification, Physical Education Teacher Certification, or a Pre-Professional advising track which includes Pre-Athletic Training, Pre-Physical Therapy, and Pre-Occupational Therapy. Health and Sport Sciences students find a variety of professional opportunities in health, sport and wellness. Our graduates will have the opportunity to seek successful careers in sport, healthcare, sport performance specialists, health and wellness directors, fitness facility managers, physical educators and teachers, coaches, exercise program directors, and sport administration professionals. This degree also provides the academic coursework for students wishing to pursue graduate studies in the areas of athletic training, physical therapy, occupational therapy, exercise physiology, biomechanics, and other related professional fields.

Credit may be granted to transfer students who have had similar courses on the baccalaureate level in a regionally accredited college or university in the United States of America or one of its territories. Teacher education transfer courses must be reviewed and approved by Alabama State Department of Education. Course equivalency is determined by the vice president of academic affairs upon the recommendation of the dean.
