Philosophy for the Department of Natural Sciences
Faculty members in the Department of Natural Sciences endeavor to develop in their students the qualities of responsibility, critical thinking, academic and professional competence, and high moral and ethical standards. Additionally, through the science curriculum, students will gain an appreciation for living organisms, the environment, and the basic processes of biology, physics, and chemistry. The faculty further seeks to establish and maintain quality undergraduate programs in the sciences consistent with a liberal arts experience in a Christian environment.
Biology (BIO)
The biology major is designed to give the student a broad understanding of the basic and unifying principles of biology. The curriculum is well rounded, but the student will usually pursue one of two directions within biology: health science studies or ecologically oriented studies. This curriculum is designed to prepare students for applying to professional schools in the health sciences or continuing their studies in graduate school.
Marine Science (MAR)
The University of Mobile offers a major and a minor in marine science. The University is a member of the Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium (MESC), a statewide group of higher education institutions affiliated with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL). Marine science courses are taught at the main campus in Mobile and at DISL in the summer. Students should anticipate taking a portion of their coursework at DISL during the summer.
