Intercultural Studies, B.A.

The purpose of this program is to equip students to build bridges across cultural barriers, acknowledging that every person bears the image of God and that every Christian is called to carry out the Great Commandments and the Great Commission.  Students in this program will gain on-campus, domestic, and international learning experience while being equipped by faculty members who have lived and served cross-culturally.

University Core and General Education Electives


University of Mobile’s undergraduate program is comprised of the College of Arts and Sciences, College of Health Professions, Alabama School of the Arts, Grace Pilot School of Business, and School of Education. All University of Mobile undergraduate students are required to complete certain basic courses that apply uniformly to the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Fine Arts degree, the Bachelor of Science degree, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, and the Bachelor of Music degree unless otherwise noted. These are identified as basic course (general education) requirements.

*Notes:


  1. Consult with your College/School advisor for specific and/or additional requirements relating to general education courses. For example, COM 101  is required for business, Christian studies, and education majors and teacher certification students. MA 110  is required for all majors in the School of Business. Education majors and teacher certification students have very specific requirements, particularly regarding English, Mathematics, History, and Laboratory Sciences.
  2. UM 101  University of Mobile 101 (1 semester hour) is required for new freshmen and transfer students.
  3. Students earning a Bachelor of Arts degree must also complete twelve semester hours of a foreign language. See specific requirements in the World Languages section of the catalog.
  4. Students earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Performance must also complete six semester hours of a foreign language.
  5. Students earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Studio Art, or Graphic Design must also complete six semester hours of a foreign language.
  6. Students earning a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in English, Creative Writing must also complete twelve semester hours of a foreign language.
  7. Students earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Management must also complete PSY 201 .  Students earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Marketing must also complete AR 226 .

 

The Major in Intercultural Studies will Include


The Intercultural Studies coursework consists of eighteen specified hours and twelve language hours, for a total of 30 hours.  This is in addition to the 29 hours of the School of Christian Studies core courses.

Notes:


An intercultural studies major earns a Bachelor of Arts degree requiring twelve semester hours of foreign language  study. An intercultural studies major may meet the language requirement with modern foreign language study, biblical language study, or a combination thereof. A student who selects biblical languages to meet the requirement may choose twelve hours of Hebrew, twelve hours of Greek, or six hours of Hebrew and six of Greek. With the permission of the advisor, a student may also choose six hours of a modern foreign language and six of a biblical language to satisfy this requirement for the B.A. degree.

Intercultural studies majors may request permission to take foreign language coursework not offered at the University of Mobile, but is necessary for international service.  Prior permission must be granted for such language study.

Hours to Degree


123 hours are requred as a minimum to graduate with a Bachelor of Arts in Intercultural Studies.
