The Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree is a professional degree program that provides a more intensive course of study than the traditional B.A. in Art. The degree prepares students to become professional visual artists, enter a specific art field or to continue their education at the graduate level. No minor is required due to the comprehensive curriculum. It provides a well-rounded knowledge of art history, extensive training in a variety of studio areas, and encourages specialization within the field. Students spend their senior year developing a body of work that will be displayed at their capstone thesis exhibition.

Faculty members work closely with students to strengthen students’ technical and conceptual abilities. They also serve as an entry point into professional practice through their own studio practices and professional networks and, if they intend to earn a higher degree, guide them through the graduate school application process. Students are expected to seek internships, attend art events, enter art shows and exhibitions, and actively participate in the art community through organizations like the Mobile Arts Council in order to cultivate their own professional networks and build their artistic resumes.
