Philosophy for the Department of Natural Sciences

Faculty members in the Department of Natural Sciences seek to develop in their students the qualities of critical thinking, academic and professional competence, high moral and ethical standards, and ecological responsibility. Through the science curriculum, students will gain an appreciation for living organisms, the environment, and the basic processes of biology, chemistry, and physics. The faculty also endeavors to maintain a rigorous undergraduate science program that emphasizes the liberal arts experience within a Christian environment.

Biology (BIO)

The biology major is designed to give the student a broad understanding of the basic and unifying principles of biology. The curriculum is well rounded, but the student will typically pursue one of three directions within the natural sciences: biology, biology with pre-health concentration, or biology with secondary certification. All biology majors must complete two writing-intensive courses within the biology curriculum as described in the Undergraduate Academic Information section of this catalog. See course descriptions for courses designated as writing-intensive. BIO courses at the 100-level may not be counted toward the major in biology.

Marine Science (MAR)

University of Mobile offers a major and a minor in marine science. The University is a member of the Marine Environmental Sciences Consortium (MESC), a statewide group of higher education institutions affiliated with the Dauphin Island Sea Lab (DISL). Marine science courses are taught at the main campus in Mobile and at DISL in the summer. Students should anticipate taking a portion of their coursework at DISL during the summer.
